Meet Dr. McLain
DR. JAMES B. McLAIN, Emeritus

Dr. Bruce McLain is a native of Chicago, Illinois, with family ties in the Statesville, North Carolina area. After graduating from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. In addition to his dental degree, Dr. McLain also earned the degrees of Master of Public Health (in Maternal and Child Health) and Master of Science (in Orthodontics) at Chapel Hill. Throughout his training he received numerous awards and honors including admission to Omicrom Kappa Upsilon (the National Dental Honorary Society),
a Pfeiffer Research Fellowship, a National Institute of Dental Research Service Award, and a Morehead Foundation Fellowship in Post-Graduate Dentistry.

Upon coming to Winston-Salem, Dr. McLain served as both an Instructor and then Assistant Professor of Dentistry (Orthodontics) at Bowman Gray School of Medicine. Several years later, after beginning his private practice, he was appointed a Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthodontics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he instructed graduate students in training to be orthodontists.

Since entering private practice, he has achieved board certification as a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. (Board certification is the culmination of a 5-10 year process of written and oral examination and an independent review of treated patients. This distinction is held by only 25% of orthodontists nationally.) In addition, his academic credentials include the publication of numerous scientific and clinical articles and many speaking engagements both locally and nationally. Dr. McLain has served on the Forsyth County Board of Health for 9 years. Currently, he is the Chairman of the Forsyth County Healthy Community Coalition.
